About Mark

From Northwest Academia to Silicon Valley

Mark started his career in academia earning a doctorate in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oregon. His love of technology, creativity, innovation, and practical research impact led him to Silicon Valley in the Fall of 2000. As a practicing social scientist, he's had the opportunity to work in software, architecture, and product design firms where he's honed his craft as a design researcher, strategist, and innovation catalyst.

He has a solid grounding in the methods and practices of Design and UX Research and is a skilled practitioner of Human Centered Design. He has a full suite of design thinking practices that can help teams understand user needs, frame problems, brainstorm solutions, and test ideas.

Mark is a trained cultural anthropologist and ethnographer which means he is always thinking holistically, questioning assumptions, trying to encourage empathy, probing for deep insight,  and working to get people to stretch their imaginations beyond the given. He is a skilled facilitator of design sprints with cross-functional teams both remotely and in-person. Mark loves to provide insights to teams and inspire them with co-creation activities that help them improve their design and product experiences based on empathy and understanding of their users.

In his spare time, he loves to practice yoga and Chinese internal martial arts, as well as spend as much time as he can in nature.
